Currently slowly comprehending...

I have never read a book with a hero as dimwitted, nerdy, awkward and... slow.... as the star in this book.

It's about this guy who just got a new job at the ordinary-looking-enough offices of J. W. Wells except that it all just doesn't seem all that ordinary. Not only does he finds himself (reluctantly) finding out more and more about his new job, he also discovers he wants to attract the attention of his workmate.

This is about as much 'contemporary fantasy' as I can handle.
